An innovative project, developed by five universities of international calibre in close collaboration with UEFA and other European team sports bodies, is continuing to make its mark. UEFA's headquarters in Nyon hosted the second session of the Executive Master in European Sport Governance (MESGO) on Wednesday.
Twenty participants from various nationalities, sporting backgrounds and high-level professional positions – including European sports bodies – came to UEFA for a day-long gathering as part of a MESGO week focusing on sports organisations and their functioning.
Among the speakers were UEFA general secretary Gianni Infantino, who explained the political and administrative organisation of UEFA, and the adviser to the UEFA president, William Gaillard, who spoke about the principle of solidarity in sports governance.
The subject matter during this week-long module has included the governance and accountability of sports organisations, strategic planning in such bodies, and stakeholder representation in sports organisations. Daily gatherings are taking place at the International Basketball Federation (FIBA), the Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA), the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and the Stade de Genève, all in Geneva, and the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in Lausanne.
The Executive Master in European Sport Governance (MESGO), one of a series of education initiatives in which UEFA is involved, is open to elected officers and association managers, as well as senior managers from European, international and national sports federations, leagues and clubs, European institutions and governments, or partners of sports organisations.
The MESGO came into being when a convention creating the master was signed at UEFA's headquarters last year.
UEFA's support is total, as the European body is confident that the MESGO will strengthen football management in Europe at a time when professional sport has evolved considerably in the face of sporting and commercial changes, and will also benefit the long-term good functioning of its member associations. Modules are also taking place in Paris, London, Mainz/Frankfurt, Barcelona and New York. A MESGO brochure is available, as is information online at mesgo.org/.
