Newcastle bring end to Hughton reign

Newcastle United FC have sacked manager Chris Hughton following the club's 3-1 loss to West Bromwich Albion FC on Sunday.

The defeat, Newcastle's third in five games, left the north-east team in 11th place in the Premier League, four points clear of the bottom three. The 51-year-old initially joined the Magpies as a coach in February 2008 and, after two spells in caretaker charge, was offered the post permanently in October 2009.

Hughton, who guided the club back into the top flight as Championship winners following their relegation in 2008/09, is the first Premier League manager to be dismissed this term. Former England forward Peter Beardsley, a youth coach at the club, has taken caretaker charge.

A club statement read: "Regrettably the board now feels that an individual with more managerial experience is needed to take the club forward. An announcement will be made shortly regarding transitional arrangements pending the appointment of a successor." Newcastle are at home to Liverpool FC on Saturday.
